Growing up in rural America comes with its own set of mental health challenges. Isolation, limited access to care, and a culture that often prizes self-reliance over asking for help can make it especially hard for rural youth to recognize what they're going through — or to know where to turn when they need support.
To help close that gap, Rural Minds launched the Rural Youth Mental Wellness Program, an initiative dedicated to building awareness, reducing stigma, and connecting young people in rural communities with trusted mental health resources.
Join Rural Minds for this one-hour webinar on October 7, 2026, introducing the program, and featuring insights from a leading researcher in youth mental health interventions alongside young rural advocates who helped shape the program's outreach and direction.
Jessica Schleider, PhD
Dr. Jessica Schleider is founding director of Northwestern University's Lab for Scalable Mental Health, where she builds brief, accessible interventions designed to reach young people who might otherwise go without support. Her research has shaped how scalable mental health care is delivered nationally. She'll share what the science says actually helps rural youth get the support they need.
Adriel (McMahan) Rigsby
Adriel Rigsby leads the Rural Youth Mental Wellness Program at Rural Minds. She grew up in Elkmont, Alabama, where she saw firsthand how stigma keeps rural youth from asking for help, and that experience continues to shape her work. She'll introduce the program and the vision behind it, alongside the young advocates who helped build it.
Asheton Medlin
Asheton Medlin is a youth leader from Roxboro, North Carolina, and a National Grange member since age eight. She has spent years advocating for rural youth mental health at the local, county, and state level. As a member of the Rural Youth Mental Wellness Program committee, she'll speak to how the program's outreach was shaped by young people who've lived these same barriers.
Charlie Moser
Charlie Moser is a Cornell University graduate whose path toward rural psychiatry began on his family's cattle farm in Montvale, Virginia, and grew through his work with NY FarmNet supporting farmers' mental health. He served as president of Virginia FFA and brings firsthand experience of the stigma and gaps in care rural communities face. As a member of the Rural Youth Mental Wellness Program committee, he'll speak to what rural youth need most from a program like this.
This professionally moderated conversation will be presented live via Zoom with the option to hear audio as listen-only. A Q&A session will follow.
To respect the privacy of participants, only presenters will be visible during the webinar. Attendees will not be seen or identified.

May 28, 2026: Removing Stigma & Building Mental Wellness In Farm Communities
JOLIE FOREMAN
Executive Director, Shelby County CaresTHOMAS EISENBARTH
Kansas farmer, rancher, and founder of Grounded agFarming is more than a livelihood – it’s a way of life shaped by hard work, resilience, and uncertainty. Financial pressures, unpredictable weather patterns, long hours, and isolation can take a serious toll on mental health. Yet, many farmers face additional barriers to getting the support they need, including limited access to mental healthcare, privacy concerns, stigma, and a culture that often values self-reliance over asking for help.
These challenges can contribute to an increase in stress, anxiety, depression, substance use, and suicides. Farmers are 3.5 times more likely to die by suicide compared to the general population. -

December 4, 2025: Alcohol Use Disorder Among Women In Rural America
Dr. PRAVESH SHARMA, MD
Associate Professor of Psychiatry & Psychology - Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science
HEATHER MAJEWSKI

Women living in rural America face unique challenges related to alcohol use disorder (AUD). Economic stress and social isolation can increase vulnerability for alcohol misuse. Stigma surrounding AUD is greater due to a lack of anonymity, limited access to treatment, and social norms that discourage seeking help. As we approach the holidays, it is important to recognize that this season can exacerbate AUD due to a combination of stress from additional expenses, social pressures, and personal expectations, along with increased alcohol availability.
This one-hour webinar features Heather Majewski sharing her lived experience of managing her alcohol use disorder that began when she was a teenager living in a small town in a rural area. We will also hear from Mayo Clinic’s Dr. Pravesh Sharma about his work leading a project funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and Mayo Clinic Research to improve patient-centered research with women who misuse alcohol. -
