The current Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) includes drug price-setting provisions that will result in less research for new medicines that can be prescribed in a pill or capsule form. Known as the “pill penalty,” this one piece of the IRA threatens the development of future breakthrough drugs that treat mental illnesses, cancer, and many other diseases.
In addition, many patients prefer taking medication as a pill rather than an infusion or injection. Since patients are typically required to travel to a medical facility for infusions and injections of medications, this is an especially important concern for patients who live in rural areas and may not have easy access to a medical facility or infusion center.
Featuring a presentation from Candace DeMatteis, Policy Director for the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease, this 45-minute webinar explains the “pill penalty” and discusses its negative impact on access to mental health treatments for patients in rural America, as well as for all patients who prefer the convenience of taking medication in the form of pills or capsules.
Webinar viewers will have the opportunity to learn the following:
Definition of small molecule versus large molecule drugs.
Ability of small molecule drugs to cross the blood-brain barrier, which is necessary to treat mental health conditions.
Advantages of small molecule medications (including convenience and therefore treatment adherence).
IRA distinction between the two types of drugs in the Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program.
The impact of the Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program on research and development.
Information for asking your members of Congress to fix this unintended consequence of the IRA by passing the bipartisan Ensuring Pathways to Innovative Cures (EPIC) Act.
This moderated webinar also includes a Q&A session.
