Supporting the Mental Health of Farmers and Agricultural Communities

Supporting the Mental Health of Farmers and Agricultural Communities

Farming is more than a job — it’s a way of life. But the pressures of farming today can be overwhelming. Financial stress, unpredictable weather, long hours, isolation, and uncertainty about the future can take a serious toll on mental health.

The Farmer Mental Health Resilience Program was created by Rural Minds to provide farmers and ranchers, farm families, farm workers, and those who support them with practical, trusted mental health resources. This free program offers education, tools, and support to help strengthen resilience, reduce stigma, and save lives.

Because taking care of the farm starts with taking care of yourself.

Why Farmer Mental Health Matters

Farmers face unique pressures that can increase stress, anxiety, depression, substance use, and suicide risk. Research shows that people living in rural America are nearly 50% more likely to die by suicide than those in urban areas – and farmers face additional challenges tied directly to their livelihood.

Limited access to mental healthcare, concerns about privacy in small communities, and a culture that often values self-reliance over asking for help can prevent farmers from getting the support they need.

Addressing farmer mental health is not just about individuals; it is about sustaining families, farms, and rural communities for generations to come.

Barriers to Accessing Mental
Health Care for Farmers

Farmers and agricultural workers often face obstacles that make mental healthcare difficult to access, including:

  • Shortages of mental health providers in rural areas.

  • Long travel distances and limited transportation.

  • Lack of broadband or reliable internet access.

  • Financial and insurance challenges.

  • Time constraints due to demanding work schedules.

  • Stigma and fear of being judged in close-knit communities.

The Farmer Mental Health Resilience Program addresses these barriers by offering free, accessible, and easy-to-use resources that can be explored anytime, anywhere.
