July Is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month
During July – Minority Mental Health Awareness Month – Rural Minds is working to raise awareness about mental health challenges in rural communities and provide mental health information and resources to individuals with diverse ethnicities, cultures, religions, sexual orientations, and gender identities.
Accessing mental healthcare is often a challenge for people who live in rural America, but that challenge can be even greater for rural minority populations. Not only do many of these individuals encounter discrimination when seeking mental healthcare, but the shortage of mental healthcare providers in rural areas can make it especially difficult to connect with a professional who is culturally sensitive.
Below is a listing of minority mental health resources. In addition, you can find more mental health resources here.
If you or someone you know is suicidal or in emotional distress, call 988.
If this is a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room.
988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code for the national suicide and crisis lifeline. People can now call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org if they are in crisis or are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support, which can include having thoughts of suicide or experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis.
