Why Talk About It?
Domestic and sexual violence can happen anywhere, including small towns and rural communities. But in rural areas, it may feel harder to talk about it because everyone knows each other and resources may seem far away.
But talking about it is important because abuse and violence thrive in silence. When you break that silence, you take back your power.
Signs to Watch For:
Abuse isn’t always physical. It can be emotional, verbal, or even digital. Some signs include:
You feel scared or unsafe around someone you know.
You’re being pressured into having sex or doing things you’re not comfortable doing.
You’re exposed to constant insults, threats, or controlling behavior.
You’re being cut off from friends, family, school, or activities.
Someone is monitoring your phone, social media, or messages.
If something feels “off,” it probably is. Listen to your instincts.
Dealing with It in Rural Life
Living in a rural area can make it feel more difficult to ask for help. There may not be a nearby counselor or shelter. And maybe you’re worried that people in your community will find out if you ask for help.
These barriers are real, but there are ways to overcome them. If you have a friend, relative, teacher, co-worker, or coach who you trust, reach out to them for support. There are also hotlines, text lines, online chats, and virtual counseling options where you can talk to someone safely and confidentially – no matter where you live.
